Mapping Potentially Acid Generating Material on Abandoned Mine Lands Using Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems

چکیده
Weathering and transport of potentially acid generating material (PAGM) at abandoned mines can degrade downstream environments contaminate water resources. Monitoring the thousands mine lands (AMLs) for exposed PAGM using field surveys is time intensive. Here, we explore use Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPASs) as a complementary remote sensing platform to map spatial temporal changes across waste rock pile on an AML. We focus testing ability established supervised unsupervised classification algorithms imagery with very high resolution, but low spectral sampling. At Perry Canyon, NV, USA AML, carried out six flights over 29-month period, RPAS equipped 5-band multispectral sensor measuring in visible near infrared (400–1000 nm). built different 3 cm resolution orthorectified reflectance maps, our tests classifications revealed benefits each approach. Supervised schemes allowed accurate mapping classes that lacked published libraries, such drainage (AMD) efflorescent mineral salts (EMS). The method produced similar maps PAGM, compared schemes, little user input. Our classified multi-temporal validated multiple lab-based methods, persistent slowly growing ‘hotspots’ jarosite pile, whereas EMS exhibit more rapid fluctuations extent. methods detail carrying broadband be applied extensively AMLs. show promise increase coverage critical environmental monitoring reclamation efforts

The geochemistry of rare earth element (REE) variations in acid waters is being studied as part of the U. S. Geological Survey Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative in two pilot watersheds, upper Animas, Colorado and Boulder, Montana. The following objectives are under investigation: (1) comparison of acid mine waters and naturally acidic springs, (2) determination of whether the dominant control on ...
